Support and understanding
Listen to them and take an interest in their problems and feelings without judgment. Affirming that they have a right to their individuality and uniqueness can be the first step toward change
Provide hikikomori with a safe and comfortable space even outside their room. They need to know that they have support and understanding outside of their isolation
Help the hikikomori get out of their room and begin to slowly adapt to the social environment. Encourage them to participate in small groups where they can find like-minded individuals
Help hikikomori develop new skills or improve existing ones. Developing confidence in their abilities will help them feel more confident in the community
Psychologists or psychotherapists can help to better understand the reasons for reclusiveness and to develop a strategy for a gradual return to the community
